Human rights movements - The struggle of citizens for democracy and freedom far beyond all borders

Security, freedom, life - three essential keywords that certainly come to mind immediately when you hear the word "human rights". The desire and aspiration for the basic rights that every human being should have simply by virtue of their existence and dignity is deeply rooted in all of us. Human rights such as the right to life, liberty, security, education, freedom of expression, equality and fair treatment in court are universal and should therefore apply to all people regardless of their origin, skin color, gender, religion or language. Nevertheless, the list of human rights violations worldwide is long. In countries such as Iran, Afghanistan, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia and many others, a system of violence and oppression is being nurtured. Violent repression by security forces to strengthen those in power is the order of the day. The chance for an open, just and democratic society is becoming less and less important in these countries and the cornerstones of our society are threatened on a daily basis. How can a right that we take for granted be granted to everyone without jeopardizing the safety and livelihoods of people in those countries? ORF presenter Rosa Lyon discusses this with: Zarifa Ghafari (Afghan activist & politician), Anouseh Ansari (astronaut, entrepreneur), Nadia Murad (President of Nadia's Initiative & Nobel Peace Prize winner) and Shirin Ebadi (Professor & Nobel Peace Prize winner).
