Helmut Leopold is with the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, where he holds the position Head of Center for Digital Safety & Security. In this responsibility he formed an international leading applied research institute for next generation information and communication technologies such as cyber security, quantum computer safe encryption, artificial intelligence, Blockchain, 5G, optical communication, model-based system engineering, and sensor systems for digital identities and protecting critical infrastructures. Helmut Leopold has an extended expertise on establishing innovation processes in organisations for achieving sustainable business value. He is president of the Austrian organization for Information and Communication Technology GIT, is board member of the Austrian Electrotechnical Association OVE and is chairing several national cyber security task forces. Before AIT he was with Alcatel and with Telekom Austria, the largest network operator in Austria. In his role as acting CTO he was the driving force for the digitalization transformation of the organization. He played a leading role for the Austrian broadband internet program and was the main driver of the IPTV service roll-out of Telekom Austria. He was Chairman of the BSF Broadband Services Forum, San Francisco, USA – an association of network provider, manufacturer and content provider. He was president of the Austrian IPV6 Task Force, was advisory director of the global industry Telemanagement Forum (TMF) and was main driver for implementing a private-public initiative to form a new research center, the Telecommunication Research Center Vienna (FTW) where he acted as vice-president for several years. Helmut Leopold has a degree in Electronics and Communications from the Technical College HTL Rankweil in Vorarlberg, a master degree (Dipl.-Ing.) in Computer Science from the Vienna University of Technology and he made his PhD in Computer Science at the University of Lancaster, UK.
